The Deputy President visits the Don Orione Centre at Kaburugi

On Wednesday 16 February the Orionine family in Kenya had the honour of hosting His Excellency Dr. William Samoei Ruto, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, at the Don Orione Centre in Kaburugi, for children and young people with disabilities.

The Deputy President expressed his appreciation for the work the Sons of Divine Providence are doing for the promotion of human dignity in people living with disabilities. He was accompanied by the area Member of Parliament, Alice Wahome, and a number of other politicians. He promised to support the Centre by providing food for the children for the next five years.

A centre born from a need

The Don Orione Centre, Kaburugi is currently under the direction of Fr. Gideon Ombwori. It was founded in 2005 by Fr. Marek Krakus, a Polish priest, in answer to a great need in this locality: caring for children with special needs.

The children and young people who come to this day centre live with autism, cerebral palsy and mental conditions. At the beginning the Centre was founded to address their nutritional needs, and to defend the rights of children living with disability — though we do not choose the word disability. We choose to say differently gifted.

Today we rehabilitate them, we give them a basic education, and we teach vocational skills to help them become self-reliant.
